  Bianjing Lantern Zhang

  Mobin Badelpour

  Intl student at Zhengzhou University

Hello, everyone. My name is Mobin Badelpour, and I am from Iran, and also currently an international student of Zhengzhou University. I am so thrilled to be here and happy to say that this is my first time experiencing the Spring Festival in Henan province. Over the long winter holiday, I tried many events and I have celebrated in many ways to find the inner atmosphere of the Spring Festival. Now, on the 24th of the February is the Lantern Festival, I wonder where should I have to go to find the ease of the atmosphere?

“Music vibrates from the flute, the moon sheds its full light, while fish and dragon lanterns dance all night.” This is a poem written by a famous Chinese poet on the Lantern Festival, proving that it is a custom on that day that people appreciate lanterns. In ancient China, during the Lantern Festival, families throughout China hang red lanterns up, which are symbols of reunion, to create a festive atmosphere.

Going down the street of this ancient city, I find a lantern-themed museum of antique beauty, which is called Bianjing Lantern Zhang. Now, there are hundreds of lanterns for people to appreciate. Let’s explore it together!

Bianjing Lantern Zhang is a family of lantern-making, whose lantern-making skills have been passing down 7 generations. Over 200 years, Bianjing Lantern Zhang has been studying and making lanterns at this museum. They have restored dozens of ancient lanterns recorded in ancient books.

Opening the door, stepping into the museum, I’m instantly transported to a world of wonder. I see hundreds of lanterns, which seem to tell us the history of Bianjing Lantern Zhang.

Look at this lantern. Do you know what does it look like? The design of this lantern was inspired by a kind of herb, which is called Jili. However, in Chinese, the word “Jili” has the same meaning as auspiciousness in English, thus the inner meaning and in depth meaning of this lantern is good luck.

This lantern here doesn’t use bamboo strips to support its frame, but the surface of itself. So the lantern is called “Wu Gu Feng Deng”. But in Chinese, “Wu Gu Feng Deng” sounds the same as a Chinese four-character idiom, which means “bumper harvest”. Therefore, this lantern expresses people’s good wishes for a good harvest.

  Zhang Juntao

The 7th-generation inheritor of Bianjing Lantern Zhang

Today, I have saw a lot of different and colorful lanterns, and I’d like to make one by myself. While I’m here enjoying these great lantern show of this museum, I’m greatly honored to learn lantern-making skills from the seventh inheritor of Bianjing Lantern Zhang, Mr. Zhang.

Nice to meet you, Mr. Zhang.

  Nice to meet you too.

So, Mr. Zhang, these lanterns are so beautiful and are drastically eye-catching! How to make these lanterns?

Mobin, welcome. I will show you how to make a Chinese lantern.

Mobin, What do you think of the lantern made by yourself?

Actually, these lanterns are so colorful, and are distinct in many aspects. For example, when I just look at this lantern, I can see the soul, and it makes me to respect what is behind this, and the history behind making these lanterns.

And also, I want to add that choice of the colors and the way that it made just remind you of the history of China and how it suppose to be made, and that’s what makes it beautiful and a part of culture.

I’m very glad that you are very talented in making lanterns, and you are very kind. I’m very happy that you can make such a beautiful lantern by yourself.

So, Mr. Zhang, I have a question, what was the reason and the encourage behind this that you and your family have kept making these lanterns for these many years?

Zhang Jinhan, my father and the sixth inheritor of Bianjing Lantern Zhang, once said that when “Bianjing Lantern Zhang” becomes a national cultural heritage, it no longer belongs to myself and our family, but to the nation and the whole world. It is our responsibility to spread the lantern-making skills.

For me, it could spread my family skills, and could help more people understand the fine traditional Chinese culture, so it is very meaningful and pleasant to do so.

Mobin, today you have made a lantern by yourself, and I guess you must be very happy. I believe that you are willing to present the lantern-making skills to your classmates and friends, and you are also welcome to bring them to our lantern-themed museum to appreciate our lanterns and learn more about Chinese culture.

Lantern is not only a symbol of family reunion and prosperity, but also a symbol of happiness, brightness, vitality and wealth. By lighting a lantern, you can express good hope and wishes. I wish everyone a family reunion full of happiness and a happy Lantern Festival.

How to make a tri-colored glazed pottery? I need to locate a place where they make a tri-colored glazed pottery. Let’s go.

Finally, I found it here. Today, I’ve arrived to Nanshishan village, in which I am going to meet someone very special, a really professional in the tri-colored glazed pottery. I think... Mr. Gao, Mr. Gao!

When we step into the village, you can find the Sancai everywhere. It’s on the roof, and in the wall and by the side of the road. This is the characteristic of Nanshishan village. So Nanshishan, as the first Chinese village characterized by tri-colored glazed pottery of Tang Dynasty, has more than 70 enterprises and more than 2,000 villagers engaged in the industry. And the products is already exported to more than 50 countries, like the United States, Egypt, Iran. It’s so popular all over the world.

  Nice work.

  Nice to meet you.

  Hello.

So Mr. Gao, could you please talk to us and explain how do we make this pottery?

You can make a brief introduction to the process of making Tang tri-colored glazed pottery.

  Gao Shuiwang

A national-level intangible cultural heritage inheritor of tri-colored glazed pottery technique

The production of Tang tri-colored glazed pottery involves numerous processes, with five major steps in particular. The first step involves sculpting the shape. Once the sculpting is done, moulds are then made using this sculpted shape. After the mould templates are completed, the shaping and production process can begin, using the moulds for shaping. After shaping, the items need to dry before the first firing. Once the initial firing is complete, they can be glazed. After glazing, the items are fired in the kiln for the second time. Once fired, they will display vibrant colors.

Wow, so many potteries, are they handmade or made with moulds?

They are made with mould, and this workshop is for glazed. And you can take anyone you want and put the glaze.

All right, let’s choose something. All right, I find it.

Oh, the small horse. I will take my choice. I do the dragon.

  Dragon.

  Baby dragon and baby horse.

  Let’s go.

  Let’s go.

  OK, finished.

Wow, I just finished my first tri-colored glazed pottery.

Congratulations, Badr. And right now we find someone to help us to put the arts in the kiln.

Mr. Gao, I’ve noticed that there are lots of replica of tri-colored glazed pottery. Tell me why should replicas be put on the museum?

Numerous Chinese tri-colored glazed potteries have been lost overseas. However, sometimes, when I visit museums abroad, I see Tang tri-colored glazed potteries from China displayed there. I can’t bring them back, but I have the techniques to replicate them. Just like this artwork. Its original is displayed in a museum in Japan. I took photos and replicated it, which is bringing the original back home using my techniques.

  Let’s open the kiln!

Wow, the temperature is so hot.

Yeah, this is already finished the second fire. And for the second fire, the temperature is going to the 1,050 degree. Right now, the temperature is going down to the safety temperature. So we can take out your work.

  Thank you.

  Your horse.

  Wow, let me see.

It’s a nice color. And I take out my dragon.

  This is an art work.

  Yes.

  Very cute, very good color.

  Baby dragon.

All right. Thank you so much, Terry, I will never forget you nor forget this moment.

This is traditional culture of China.

  Thank you so much.

In this village, surprises could be found everywhere. Look, a maid hold on a dog. If there was a talent show for pottery, Tang Sancai would definitely be the most beautiful one. This village is worth visiting. It’s just so exquisite.

Glad to meet you. Welcome to learn dough modeling, the traditional Chinese folk art. Come in.

This is a scene from a traditional Chinese opera.

This one is from Chinese Buddhism.

This one is also from Chinese Buddhism, and he is sitting on the devil.

The themes of dough modeling include figures and animals. The subjects are truly diverse.

Yes, the Chinese dough modeling features a very rich variety of subjects, such as plants, animals, and even different figures. These themes can all be expressed through dough modeling.

This is called Rabbit God Riding a Tiger. Actually, in Chinese folklore, there’s a term called “Tù ér yé” (Rabbit God). Images like this one, a Rabbit God riding a tiger, represent courage and bravery in Chinese folk art and legends.

  Similar to early garage kits.

That’s right, these are the most traditional Chinese garage kits.

I only know that the raw material for dough modeling is flour. Then I have a question: Why is it flour?

In ancient times, China was an agricultural powerhouse, especially in Henan, which is known for its abundant wheat production. So flour was not only used for food, but also to create various decorative items and crafts, fruits, such as fruits and other small handicrafts, for people to play with and appreciate.

Then how long does it take to make such a piece?

For small dough figures like this, it generally takes about 20 minutes. However, for more complex figures, it might take three or four days, or even a week or half a month.

Would you like to try making a dough figure yourself?

I’d like to make a tiger.

Alright, today I’ll teach you how to make a tiger out of dough.

First, knead the dough. It’s yellow at the beginning, but as you knead and stretch it, it turns white. Press and knead the dough with your hands. Apply some force. Once it becomes smooth and pliable, the dough is ready. Since we’re making a tiger, let’s add some color to the dough. If the dye comes out, make sure to incorporate it well into the dough and avoid getting it on your hands. Now that the dough color is set, next, we can use these colored dough to make some tigers.

Mr Cui, what do you think of this piece I made? What do you think of this piece I made?

I think you did a great job. At least the tiger’s shape is very complete and looks quite nice.

How long do you think it would take for me to reach your level?

I think if you study for about three or four years, you’ll be able to reach that level.

I’ve been learning dough modeling for over 20 years. Zhengzhou-style dough modeling also has a very long history, more than 120 years. It has been passed down through four generations: from my teacher, my teacher’s father and my teacher’s grandfather. Dough modeling began around that time. Now, I am the fourth-generation inheritor of Zhengzhou-style dough modeling. Moreover, the Zhengzhou-style dough modeling has a long history and also possesses its own unique characteristics.
