Episode1 Tibetan Class in a Hutong I
（开场）
【珠穆独白】我叫珠穆，家乡是阿坝的，2003年来到北京，开始了我和北京、我和藏文教学的故事。那时候，我没有钱，没有朋友，没有多少学生，也没有固定的教室，2013年创立了珠穆藏语工作室，搬进了这个别有风味的胡同。
I am Drugmo from Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. In 2003, I came to Beijing where the stories between me and this city and between me and Tibetan teaching started. At that time, I had got no money, no friends, and I only had a few students. There wasn't a fixed classroom, either. In 2013, Drugmo Tibetan Studio was established and relocated into this hutong with a distinctive appeal.

珠穆：今天我们的安多语中级班就要开课了。对这个班来说，这节课是他们在这个胡同里的第一节课，也是最后一堂课。应该有十多名学生吧，具体能到几位还不清楚，但是我已经印好了书，正在回去呢！现在就回去，等他们到了就发给他们。
Today, our intermediate class of the Amdo dialect will begin. For students in this class, this is their first class in this hutong and also the last class. Around a dozen of students.
I don't know the exact number. But I have printed textbooks. I am going back. I am going back. Give them after their arrival.

学生范相灿：合个影吧？

【同期声】（珠穆）上个月中旬，我和房东聊过。房东说可能要在两三个月内搬走，我说没有问题，但是过了一天，又说要在一个星期内搬走。
In the middle of last month, I communicated with the landlord who told me to move away within two or three months. I agreed. But one day after our conversation, I was told to move away within a week.
【同期声】（学生阿九）三年前，2016年3月份的时候，我第一次来这里上课，她就站在门口来接我。一下就感觉不一样，就在一个灰色的胡同里，就有一个彩色的人，色彩就有很强烈的对比，那种情感就是不一样的。
Three years ago, in March 2016, I attended my first class here. She stood at the door and welcomed me. At that moment, something was different.In a grey hutong, there was a person in color, revealing a strong color contrast. That feeling is different.

学生1：珠穆老师你好！
Hello, Ms. Drugmo.
珠穆：哎呀！你怎么从这边过来？你是第一个过来的。

学生1：对对。
Indeed.
珠穆：咱班里面，就是你看，我们以前藏文老师就说，像我们最远的同学最先来，你最远的来得最快。
Our Tibetan teacher once said those who live far always come first. You live the farthest away from here, but come first.
学生1：最远的最怕迟到。
I am afraid of being late.
珠穆：对对，去吧去吧，我看其他同学有可能就在这边了。
Yes, go ahead. Other students may come this way.
珠穆：终于等到了。

学生2：不好意思，迟到了迟到了。
Sorry, I am late.
珠穆：走走走，该上课了，就等你一个人了。

【同期声】（珠穆）珠穆藏语工作室，有藏语初级班和中级班，还有音乐课、舞蹈课等，大概有八个班，学生有汉族、藏族、外国人等。
Drugmo Tibetan Studio has eight classes, including primary and intermediate Tibetan classes, music and dance classes. There are Han students, Tibetan students and foreign students here.

珠穆：开始了，跟关雷民说开始了，她在美国看着呢！等一下，我来。以后得常用这个玩意儿。
Class begins. Tell Guan Leimin, class begins. She is in the United States.Let me operate it. It will be frequently used later.

珠穆：哎呀，顺序没对了。藏语你看记得啊，拼读的顺序是什么呀？书写的顺序。
Ah! You've got a wrong order. You need to remember the spelling and writing orders of Tibetan.
珠穆：其实今天我们，今天第一课，也是最后一次在这里，是吧？今天我的心情是非常奇特，没法用言语去表达。
In fact, this is our first class and also last class here. I have a mixed feeling beyond words.
【同期声】（珠穆）第一次教藏文只是为了生存，是为了生活。我在反问自己，我能做好的事情是什么，我是来自高原，来自雪域高原，而我能带来的也是三十个藏文字母，这样仔细想过之后，教藏文是我的生活中最有希望的事情。
My first engagement in Tibetan teaching is for survival and for life. I am asking myself what I can do well.I am from Tibetan-inhabited regions, and from the snow-covered plateau.What I have brought are thirty Tibetan alphabets. Pondering over this question, I have found that Tibetan teaching is the most hopeful matter in my life.
（上课现场）
珠穆：好，接下来我就要发我们的“智慧之剑”了。因为这个是用来写字的，字是代表的什么？智慧，从最简单的角度讲，让我们拥有分辨能力。好，各自传下去，希望大家突破无明。
OK. Next, I will distribute our "sword of wisdom", as it is for writing. What do words stand for? Wisdom. In a simple view, they help us know right from wrong. OK. Hand them on. Hope you reach avidya.
珠穆：大家理解哦，学藏文并非是学宗教，而是我们来学习宗教也好，文化也好，历史也好，你爱学什么学什么的工具，这个是钥匙。
As a general understanding, Tibetan learning is not religion-oriented,but Tibetan is a tool for us to learn religion, culture, history or whatever. It is a key.
【同期声】（学生阿九）我来珠穆藏语工作室学习藏语，让我找到了一条道路。这条道路是通过藏文字母的密码，然后通往藏文化以及一个更神奇的世界，就是发现我自己的内心更丰富的一个世界。
Learning Tibetan in Drugmo Tibetan Studio offers me a path which directs me to Tibetan culture and a more amazing world through the passwords of Tibetan alphabets. It helps me find a richer inner world.
（上课现场）
珠穆：胸腔音基本上都是一样的，是吧？“嘎答瓦麻啊”（藏语），这个我们一定要知道，因为你把这五个读好了，意味着我们接下来藏文就读得好。
Chest pronunciations are almost the same, right? Ga, da, wa, ma, ah.We must know them. If these five letters are correctly pronounced,it means we can read Tibetan well.
【珠穆独白】在这里的六、七年时间里，我们开开心心地度过，也是开开心心地上完了每一节课，然后就着手搬到一个新的房子。
For six or seven years here,we have spent a happy time and attended every class happily. Now, we have to leave for a new place.
（上课现场）
珠穆：我其实挺心酸的，你看这一刹那，其实我的心还是希望你们下节课到这里上课。下节课我们不知道在哪了。没事，也高兴吧，也伤心。其实有一刹那，刚刚的一刹那，我觉得下节课我们还在这里上课。
Actually, I am sad. At this moment,I still hope that you can continue your class here. But I don't know where we can meet the next time. It's over. I am happy but also sad. In fact, just at this moment, I thought we can attend next class here.
【同期声】（学生阿九）当时我听到这个消息的时候非常难过。难过之后，其实有很多很多以往在这里度过的欢乐时光，一下子就涌向心头。尤其是你们走到这个胡同里面，在外面都是很老北京的那种，但是一旦你走进这个院子，一下就觉得到了另外一个世界。（流泪）还是没绷住，真的不好意思。
I was very sad when I knew this news. I remember many many happy moments we have spent here, especially when I saw you walking into this hutong. Outside this yard is an old Beijing scene. But when you enter this yard, you may feel you are in another world. I cannot help myself. Sorry.
【同期声】（珠穆）有个教学的地方，有个放黑板的地方，只要有个能继续教三十个藏文字母的地方，这个宇宙（地方），在我们藏文化里叫宇宙，那么这个宇宙（地方）就在那里。这样去想的时候，我没什么可担忧的。但是学生们太难过了，都在伤心地哭。看到他们哭时，我也忍不住哭了，不然没必要哭的。
As long as there is a teaching place, as long as there is a place for the blackboard, as long as there is a place where I can continue teaching thirty Tibetan alphabets, there is the place or universe that we call in Tibetan. So I am not worried. But our students are sad. Some even shed tears. When I saw them crying,I also shed tears.Actually, it is not necessary.

【珠穆独白】以前我住的地方没有院子，虽然这个院子很小，但对于我来说很珍贵，因为可以挂经幡，可以种花，所以我非常喜欢这里。
There is no yard at my former place of residence. This yard is small, but it is precious for me, because I can hang prayer flags and plant flowers. So I like it very much.
【字幕】外出寻找教室

【同期声】（珠穆）今天我们有很多事情，去外面看一下，找个暂时可以上藏文课的教室。我给我的朋友们打过电话了，他们说可以在他们的公司里上课。
We have a lot of things to do today. Now, we are going out to look for a temporary classroom. I called my friends.I can continue my Tibetan teaching in their company for the time being.
（路上发语音）
珠穆：收拾东西什么的，哎呀 这边乱七八糟的，您就不用过来了。这种事情能检验一下咱们自己的心，没事，放心吧！那天我学了一句汉语，说“树挪死，人挪活”，说不定咱们在这边胡同里住了六七年了，然后再换一个地方说不定更好呢？是不是？放心吧！别担心。
I need to pack up. Ah. Things are really in a mess. You don't need to come. Such things can test us. Don't worry. I learned a Chinese proverb:Frequent shifts make a tree dead but a person prosperous. We have lived in this hutong for six or seven years. Moving away may bring a better future. Right? Don't worry.
【同期声】（珠穆）我刚到北京时没有什么固定的工作，比如当过服务员，在餐厅工作过，在那里扫过厕所，洗过碗。
When I just came to Beijing, there were no proper jobs. I worked as a waitress.In a restaurant, I once cleaned the toilet and washed dishes.
（地铁上）
珠穆：十多年前刚到北京的时候，住在传媒大学附近。那边冬天有时候会下雪啊，下雪时我徒步去传媒大学，这可能是我想家了吧！那时候我年纪很小。现在我走到哪儿，哪儿都是我的家。北京是我的家乡，四川也是家乡，我在哪里，哪里就是我的家乡。这个城市机会很好，如果自己有能力的话机会很多。在这里生活最主要靠毅力，敢闯敢拼就可以创造自己的生活。
More than ten years ago when I just came to this city, I lived near the Communication University of China (CUC).Sometimes, it snows in winter. On snowy days, I often went to the university. Probably because I missed my family.I was young then. Now, home is where I am. Beijing is my home, so is Sichuan. Home is where I am. This city offers great opportunities for capable persons. Perseverance is very important for the struggle in this city.We can create our life through bold endeavors.
【同期声】（珠穆）以前我不够自信，心很小（自卑），我自己的性格也好，还是我所熟知的藏族历史和藏文化等方面，我都不够自信。
I was not confident.I was even a little bit self-abased. I was not confident in personal character,and also in Tibetan history and culture that I am familiar with.
【字幕】与学生碰面 Meeting students
（看场地）
学生康泰：够不够大？
Is it spacious?
珠穆：大是够大。从这面这么学习是吧？黑板在这面？
Yes. In this direction? The blackboard can be placed here？
学生康泰：因为桌子有很多一米二的桌子，比咱们那大多了，咱那小屋你想想。
There are many tables which are 1.2 meters long. It is much bigger.Yes, our yard is very small.
珠穆：对，我得拍下来。
I will take some photos.
珠穆：就这两天我就的定下来，然后就得搬。原则是不给你添麻烦的前提下，学生方便的前提下，对我来说在哪儿都行。
I must settle this issue in these two days, and we need to move. I hope I will not cause trouble for you. For the convenience of students,anywhere is OK for me.
【同期声】（珠穆）我希望在这两个月内不用停课，那就太好了。
I hope our class will not suspend within the two months.It will be great.
【同期声】（珠穆）当时房东给我打了个电话，说感到很伤心。房东她这样说的，说我们也没什么办法，国家有一些（政策）规划，不搬也没办法，我也理解。
The landlord felt sorry over the phone.She said that she had no alternative due to the national policies or planning.So we must move away. I understand her.
（路边打电话）
珠穆：那个黑色的楼是吧？我看见安邦了，然后我现在在益家大厦。
Is that black building? I see Anbang. Now, I am in Yijia Building.
【同期声】（珠穆）打了很多电话。我给别人打过电话，别人也给我打过很多电话。既要能满足我的需求，又不让房东为难，同时还可以教藏文，这个确实很难。
I made many phone calls.I made calls to others and also received many calls. It should meet my needs and should not cause troubles for the landlord. Meanwhile, we can teach Tibetan there. It is hard to meet the requirements at the same time.
（夜归）
【同期声】（珠穆）今天确实有点累，一整天都在外面忙，一旦回到这个胡同还是很开心，感觉很舒服。
I visited three units today. I am tired now. I was out all day. But I am happy after returning to this hutong. I feel comfortable.

3 days before moving

珠穆：倒倒倒。你们两个带了多少纸箱子呀？
Reverse. Go on. How many paper boxes have you brought?
学生张垚：中等的九个，两个大的，可能不够，不够你就买呗。
Nine medium-sized and two large ones. It may not be enough. You can buy some after these are all used.
珠穆：再买呗，肯定够了。

珠穆：康巴卫视，他们听说我们搬家，咱们要搬家了，然后他们就那个连夜赶过来。

学生张垚：啊？在哪儿啊？

珠穆：从成都赶到北京来。

珠穆：就是想记录咱们的这一幕。

【同期声】（珠穆）像四、五年前学过藏文的学生，虽然平时没怎么联系，但他们听到搬家的消息，就一个个蹦出来，问我以后我们的工作室在哪里，怎么去办学，问我以后有什么想法，有什么计划。他们打了很多电话，这样一来我很感动，非常感动。
Some students who learned Tibetan here four or five years ago don't have much contact with me, but they called me after they heard of the news and asked me about the address of the new studio and its teaching and also my ideas and future plans. Many of them called me.I am really touched. Deeply moved.
（与邻居道别）
珠穆：奶奶，我明后天就搬走了。
Granny, I will move away in these two days.
李奶奶：就搬走了啊？
You are leaving?
珠穆：我怕明后天忙，来不及跟你说再见，送给你。

珠穆：没呢，还没有找着呢，对，先过渡一下。

奶奶：上哪住去？一见面就是笑呵呵的，我特喜欢她。

【同期声】（学生张雅彬）其实就像我们经常看到，珠穆老师和胡同里的大妈大爷关系特别好，可能刚才一秒钟以前板着的脸，一看到珠穆老师立刻笑开来花。然后每次珠穆老师跟他们用胡同里的胡同串子儿的话来聊天。这个其实我们作为北京人，也是生活在胡同里那么多年我们都做不到。因为她本身自己有一颗开放和包容的心，所以这个城市对她来说开放和包容的，跟城市其实是融为一体的。
As we know, Ms. Drugmo gets along well with aunties and uncles living in the hutong.They may keep a straight face before a second,but smile when they see Ms. Drugmo.Every time, Drugmo talks with them with the old Beijing dialect. We are natives and live in this hutong for many years. But we can't do what Drugmo did. As she is open and tolerant, this city is open and tolerant towards her. She fits into this city.
（李奶奶来送围巾）
珠穆：您送我一个围脖，哎呦，那咋整？那我看到这个的时候就想起您。
She gives me a scarf as a gift. Ah. What to do? This scarf will remind me of you.

【同期声】（学生张雅彬）其实只是心里有很多的不舍，很多的留恋。我觉得所以老师情绪会比较波动。它是一种真正巨大的感动，就是在这么短的时间里面，看到了亲情啊，友情啊，就是人生最闪光的、最闪亮的、最美好的一面，都在这一次的事件里面，全部都展现出来了。
I feel attached to them very very much. Her mood has swung in these days.It is really moving. In a short time, affection friendship among neighbors have been revealed. These are the most shining and beautiful moments in life. All of them have been shown in this incident.
【同期声】（珠穆）这里住的时间有点久了，这些奶奶们都很可爱啊！说真的很舍不得，生活就是这样，收拾东西吧。

【同期声】（珠穆）我没想过我珠穆的命运、我珠穆住在哪这些事情，而是在想我们教学的地方，怎么去教学？以及未来的工作室在哪里？我想这些都是三十个字母的命运，就是我珠穆的命运。
I've never thought about my fate and my place of residence. Instead, I think about the place and the way of our teaching and our future studio. I think,the fate of the thirty Tibetan alphabets is my fate.

The day of moving
【同期声】（珠穆）再过半个小时，我的学生就开车过来了。我们把这里的东西收拾好就要搬走了。这里住了很久了，有点舍不得，有点伤心，感觉很难受，不管怎么样终究还是要搬走。
Half an hour later, my student will drive here. After packing up, we will move away. We have lived here for a long time. We are reluctant to leave. A little bit sad.I feel bad. Anyway, we will move away.
（开始搬家）
珠穆：等一下啊，这有些东西，我们带不走的。
Wait a moment.There is something that we cannot take away.
侄子：（藏文字母）这小姨的信仰。
They (Tibetan alphabets) are my aunt's belief.
珠穆：（藏文字母）我的护法、我的本尊、我的信仰。
They (Tibetan alphabets) are my dharma protector, my Yidam and my faith.
