许建树在一个艺术家庭长大
Laurence grew up in an artistic family.

His father was an architect and his mother was

an opera performer.

He was instilled with a desire to create glamor and beauty.
他对时尚的兴趣从很小的时候就开始了
His interest in fashion started at a young age
他甚至用最不传统的方式
and he even tailored his first dress
裁制了自己的第一件衣服
in the most unconventional way.
我的人生第一次服装秀是我的初中的时候
I had my first fashion show when I was in junior high.
我家里有一本书叫《青岛裁剪》
There’s a book “Qingdao Tailoring” at home
我竟然拿着那个书用平面裁剪的方式
and I used it to learn pattern-cutting.
而且我从来没有学过任何一天服装
I had never made any clothes before
给我的姐姐做了一件旗袍
but I made a Qipao for my sister.
做好了以后
After the dress was done,
我就邀请我的姐姐骑着单车去街上逛一圈
I asked my sister to cycle around town in it.
一是炫耀我设计的旗袍
I wanted to show off my creation,
第二炫耀我姐姐的美
at the same time show off my sister’s beauty.

At a time when Chinese designs were

often regarded as fast fashion,
甚至完全照搬西方的感觉和风格的时候
and even outright copies of Western sense and style,

Laurence was determined to break this perception

It’s a material meant for the emperor,

and it takes one day just to weave one inch of it.

Yes, one inch, or 3 centimeters.

So an inch of it is as valuable as an inch of gold.

It’s woven together with gold, silver,

But the market was not quite ready

But I just love them.

Because I don't want these beautiful things
莫名其妙地在世界上消失
to disappear in the world somehow.
我其实用它开始做衣服的时候
When I started using them in my designs,
无数人两边倒
there were many who would compliment me,

and yet criticize me at the same time.

其实就是这样子不断生存
I just kept going.
那个时候你知道生存很艰难
It was a very difficult time.
我做的大部分的衣服都是用来蒙灰的
Most of the clothes I made then never saw the light of day.
即便如此 许建树仍奋力向前
Even so, Laurence strived on.

I was working and designing every waking hour.
